Job Summary

The Senior Communications Manager - Catawba Nuclear Station position supports Duke Energy nuclear generation communications and is responsible for managing the internal and external communications programs for the nuclear plant.

Responsibilities

  • Providing internal employee communications support and strategic planning
  • Providing communications counsel to site leadership and employees
  • Developing and conducting presentations
  • Developing and implementing communications plans
  • Writing feature stories
  • Developing media messages and serving as media spokesperson
  • Managing internal and external issues
  • Conducting nuclear station tours
  • Participating in the emergency response organization
  • Building and sustaining relationships with external stakeholders
  • Coordinating community relations activities/events
  • Managing plant neighbor/customer interactions
  • Serves in a support role to advance nuclear strategy communications and outreach

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations or other related degree
  • In addition to bachelor's degree, five (5) years minimum of related work experience
  • In lieu of bachelor's degree AND five (5) years minimum of related work experience listed above, high school diploma/GED AND nine (9) years minimum of related work experience

Specific Requirements

  • Must clear nuclear background check for unescorted nuclear access.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in internal communications, community affairs, corporate communications and/or public relations.
  • Demonstrated experience with internal employee communications including developing and writing for employee newsletters and leadership communications; creating and administering surveys; developing employee messages; writing feature stories and developing materials for online and digital platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically plan communications, including objectives which are achieved through tactics and tied directly to measurable results.
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently, as well as collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to interface effectively with all levels within the organization.
  • Experience with digital media, Web publishing, social media and digital communications platforms (videos, electronic signage, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Experience with external relations, stakeholder engagement and issues management
  • Experience working with the general public, customers, face-to-face and via telephone.
  • Experience conducting presentations to various audiences, internal and external, including challenging audiences.
  • Experience in crisis communications and ability to participate in crisis management response.
  • Experience working with the media, developing press releases and media messages, developing and maintaining relationships with reporters, conducting interviews with the media.
  • Highly motivated individual who can follow through and work with minimal direction or supervision.
  • Available to work occasional evenings to support public meetings or multi-day weather events as needed.
  • Ability to successfully pass station requirements for unescorted access.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Previous energy industry experience, including support for nuclear generation.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing communications counsel and advice to executives.
  • Experience handling conflict and contentious issues internally and externally.
  • Extensive experience working with community organizations.

Working Conditions

  • Position will be based at Catawba Nuclear Station, but will also require reporting in to Duke Energy Plaza in Charlotte, NC
  • M – F, 2 – 3 days per week in office. May be required on-site as needed to lead effectively and for emergency response.
  • Travel: 5%. Position requires occasional travel to sites in North and South Carolina.
  • Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to Catawba Nuclear Station and Duke Energy Plaza.
