Zap Energy is looking for a driven, detail-orientated Test Engineer to join our growing R&D organization. The Test Engineer’s responsibilities include performing validation tests on high- voltage high-current assemblies, component testing for fusion device capacitor banks, testing of advanced instrumentation for pulsed power plasma devices, documenting test procedures and results, and providing feedback during design reviews. The Test Engineer must be able to adjust quickly to changing conditions, communicate effectively under pressure, and provide effective suggestions for improvement. 

To be successful as a Test Engineer, the candidate must demonstrate a sound understanding of engineering terminology and be able to work well in a team. Outstanding Test Engineers are self-starters who demonstrate an insatiable curiosity, a strong work ethic, and effective interpersonal skills. 

Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Work with project teams to gather product requirements.  
  • Plan and perform hardware integration tests and performance validation tests. 
  • Work with Technicians to build protypes, install new systems, and execute tests on existing tests stations. 
  • Document test results. 
  • Troubleshoot equipment and test article failures. 
  • Participate in design reviews for new internal test equipment. 
  • Commissioning and debug of new test equipment 
  • Provide operational documentation for new equipment. 
  • Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team. 
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned. 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial or similar OR 5 years of verifiable experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. 
  • Experience with electronics, high voltage systems (10-100 kV).  
  • Experience with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). 
  • Extensive experience with electrical test equipment (oscilloscopes, power analyzers, high potential testers, etc.). 
  • Ability to read electrical schematic diagrams. 
  • Ability to develop and maintain a safe working environment. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. 
  • Working knowledge of industrial health and safety practices. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, and Excel. 

Preferred: 

  • Certification in Quality Assurance 
  • Solidworks/Revit knowledge 
  • Experience in an R&D environment. 
  • Experience with pulsed power systems. 
  • Ability to lift 30-50 lbs. daily. 
  • Experience with vacuum systems (1e-5 to 1e-8 torr) 
  • Software skills: Microsoft Visio, OrCAD or Altium, Jira/Confluence 

The estimated annual salary range for this position is $95K – 130K. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and the actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications.  The range is published in accordance with the Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act.

Zap Energy is building a low-cost, compact, and scalable fusion energy platform that confines and compresses plasma without the need for expensive and complex magnetic coils. Zap’s sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch technology provides compelling fusion economics and requires orders of magnitude less capital than conventional approaches.
